How to organize a group khatm
A group khatm shares the reading of the whole Quran among several people: each reads one or more juz, and together the circle completes it. Families often read one for a loved one who has passed away, for someone who is ill, in Ramadan, or simply week after week.
1. Set the intention and a last day
Say what the khatm is for, in a line everyone understands, and when it should be complete. A week is common; before a gathering or the end of Ramadan works too.
2. Choose the parts
Thirty juz suit most circles: each part is about 20 pages. With many readers or little time, use 60 hizb of about 10 pages each, so more people can take part.
3. Share out the parts
Post the list in the family chat and let people claim a juz, or assign them yourself. Fast readers can take two. For elders without a phone, write their name next to a juz and follow up with a call.
4. Follow up
Mark each juz when it is read. A day or two before the last day, remind the ones still reading, and hand on any juz someone can't finish.
5. Complete it, and start again
When the last juz is read, let everyone know. Many circles gather to make dua together, and some start the next round right away.
A message for the family chat
Assalamu alaikum. We are reading a khatm for [intention], to finish by [day]. Please pick a juz that is still free and write your name next to it. If you can't finish yours, say so and someone else will take it.
